Fun runners taking part in the 2006 Bristol Ha...

Runners and walkers are invited to participate in Sea You at the Beach, a 5K run, 2.5K walk and kids’ fun run set for Nov. 19 downtown. Proceeds from the event will benefit For Pete’s Sake Cancer and Respite Foundation and the Christine Federico Ambrose Children’s Education Fund. With more than 700 participants already signed up, the event will celebrate the memory of Christine Ambrose, who is survived by her husband, Larry, and their eight children. The Christine Federico Ambrose Children’s Education Fund was established by friends and family of Christine and Larry Ambrose in May 2011 after her death. The fund aims to give their children “the tools to build mountains of memories and to carry the spirit of their mother throughout their lives.”

For Pete’s Sake was established by Marci Bossow Schankweiler in 1999 in memory of her husband, Peter R. Bossow Jr., whose 15-month battle with cancer ended with his death Sept. 1, 1999. Since its inception, the organization has served more than 3,900 people. The event is hosted by the St. Joseph Downingtown CYO cross country and track teams with hopes of building an ongoing stream of support for the children of Christine and Larry Ambrose. Additionally, Larry Ambrose will donate a portion of proceeds to For Pete’s Sake Cancer Respite Foundation. For Pete’s Sake enables adult cancer patients and their loved ones to take a break from cancer by providing them with an all-expense paid respite vacation to various locations along the East Coast and the Caribbean.

The race starts at the corner of Church and Market streets in West Chester. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at Barnaby’s West Chester on 15 S. High St. Registration is $25 and can be made online atwww.runccrs.com or by check payable to Chris Ambrose Memorial Sea You at the Beach 5K.  For more information visit www.takeabreakfromcancer.org.

West Chester School Board Hopefuls Debate

Close to 70 parents and residents of the West Chester Area School District attended a “Meet the Candidates” debate with potential candidates for the district’s board of directors at East High School Wednesday evening.
The debate, hosted by the Parent Teacher Organization Council (PTOC), featured the same eight candidates from Tuesday’s debate at the Daily Local News, as the Republican candidates declined an invitation to attend because of the presence of the six write-in candidates. Candidates in attendance included Democrat Wayne Burton, self-proclaimed Independent Ted Diehl and the write-in candidates — Jim Smith, Rick Swalm, Sue Tiernan, Spencer Virta, Gary Bevilacqua and Toni Keg.

Though the Republican candidates were not in attendance, a student representative from the Young Republicans in the school district handed out fliers regarding the candidate’s decision to not attend the event. The handout stated, “(The Republican), and other, candidates on the ballot submitted themselves to the financial background checks, interviews, and the election process this past spring which gave you, the voters, a say, as well.”

“The ‘write-in’ candidates had until Aug. 1 to get their names on the ballot for November, but chose not to do so. Anyone can write his/her name on an election ballot; however, one cannot enter a marathon at Mile 23 and expect to be on the same footing as those who have been in it from the start,” the statement continued.

In closing, the statement said the candidates are available for debates with other candidates on the ballot as they did on Sunday in a debate organized by the League of Women Voters. The Republican candidates also made themselves available at the West Chester high schools where they spoke with members of the Young Republicans. For more information on the debate check out the full article at Dailylocal.com!
