Fundraising for Downingtown skatepark continues

After almost a year, Pints for the Park returned to the Station Taproom on Tuesday night to raise funds for the Downingtown Skatepark. “The reason we’re (doing this again) is because it was really successful the first time,” said Wesley Terry, founder and chairman of Downingtown Skatepark Association. “We figured, why change the recipe, we’ll just cook the same thing twice.” While the local restaurant was open for dinner, the event offered patrons and community members the opportunity to also donate money and freely sample beer from Artisan Homebrew, a supporter of the skatepark project.

Sean McGettigan, owner of the restaurant, said that he first decided to become involved with aiding the association because of the recreational benefit he believes it will offer local youths. Although McGettigan does not skateboard, he said he has friends that do. “We’re in our 30s now and we owe it to the kids that don’t have the resources to pull together something like this,” said McGettigan. According to Terry, completion of phase one of the park is within reach, and the association will be present at Borough Council’s work session Wednesday in the hopes of deciding on an intended construction site and determining cost and specifications for the smaller skatepark. Completion of phase one will offer local skateboarders a venue until the larger skatepark is built. Terry said he is already planning for future fundraising events and opportunities, such as a sponsorship plan where donors can dedicate an obstacle or fixture to the park. Anyone wishing to volunteer or contribute can visit www.DowningtownSkatepark.com for more information, such as how to make a charitable, tax-deductible donation using eBay.
