The annual Old-Fashioned Christmas parade will be taking place tonight at 7:15pm (rain or shine). More than 30,000 spectators come out to enjoy it and the entire parade route is free and open to the public. Due to its popularity, the downtown will be crowded. It is advisable to come into town early (the streets begin to close in the late afternoon), find parking, and enjoy dining and shopping before the event. On Saturday June 6, 2013 the The Annual Iron Hill Twilight Race Series will be taking place in Downtown West Chester. West Chester transforms into a colorful street festival full of fun with lots of free activities for the entire family. The high point will be the professional bicycle race along with block parties, foot races, and kids games. See the complete list of activities. This weekend, November 29th through December 2nd, Downtown West Chester will be filled with holiday charm! Old-Fashioned Christmas weekend consists of stores and restaurants decorated for the season and The Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce presents the Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade, sponsored by Mars Drinks, on Friday November 30 at 7:15pm. The Lincoln Building, 28 West Market Street, will be open for free tours on Friday, November 30, 5:00pm to 7:15pm. Other activities include the Gettysburg Address competition featuring students reciting Lincoln’s famous speech from the balcony and a book signing with authors Bruce Mowday and Lisa Loeb. Dave Fairman ran Fairman’s Skate shop in downtown West Chester for 24 years, but now he has a new gig as the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce Director of Membership. “I’ve experienced how the chamber can help as a business owner,” Fairman said. “The connections I built helped move my business forward. As the director of membership I will be primarily charged with engaging current members and using the benefits of the chamber to attract new members.”
Fairman also said that he’ll wear a lot of hats at this job, but his primary focus will be on building relationships in the community. “It’s called the ‘Greater West Chester Chamber,’” Fairman said. “We want to make sure we help people that don’t just live in the borough. We need to find out from all our members what their expectations are.” Fairman added, “My strongest attributes are my abilities to connect and relate to business owners. I understand their needs because I’ve been there myself.”
According to Fairman, he had been looking for an opportunity to take a step back from the skate shop when the position opened up at the chamber. “It really came together organically,” Fairman said. “It was a great opportunity, and it came around at a good time when I was considering moving on.” For now though Fairman is happy and proud to be working for the chamber. “I knew what I was getting myself into when I signed up for the job, and I am ready for it,” Fairman said. “I couldn’t be happier.”
Fairman added, “I’ve been involved with chamber for about three decades now. It’s a terrific organization, and I am proud to be a part of it.” “I just hope to make a positive impact,” Fairman said.
West Chester celebrates Old-Fashioned Christmas with a four-day event! On the evening of December 2, the Tree Lighting occurs at 6:15pm with the Jingle Elf Run at 6:30pm. Christmas Parade begins at 7:15pm. The entire celebration features more than forty activities including guided walking tours of the historic downtown area and performances by a wide variety of musicians from gospel choirs to quartets.
